Collectors collect—or attempt to collect—money that isn’t owed every day, a clear violation of the law.

Collecting More Than is Owed

Collectors may not collect or attempt to collect more money than is owed under the agreement creating the debt or by law.

Violation of Privacy

It is unlawful for a debt collector to embarrass you by telling your employer, family, friends, or neighbors that you owe money.

Harassing Phone Calls

Too many collection calls and calls at night are prohibited by law.

Notice Violations

Collectors must always notify you of your right to dispute the debt, and to request validation.

Abusive Language

Collectors have to treat you with respect: no insults, no profanity, and no racial slurs.
